Dharamsala, December 17: Days after the Dalai Lama announced that he is contemplating retirement in the next six months, the exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama this week said the move does not mean he will dissociate himself from the Tibetan people's struggle for freedom.

"More than 99 per cent of Tibetans in and outside Tibet trust me, so I have the moral responsibility to serve them. My call for complete retirement does not mean that I will forget the Tibetan struggle," he told reporters on Tuesday (Dec 14) at Kalimpong in West Bengal. (WATCH HERE)
"I am a Tibetan and every Tibetan has the moral obligation to carry out the struggle," the 75-year-old Tibetan leader said, adding that to resolve the Tibet issue would remain his top priority.
The spiritual leader's statement came following reports of Tibetans living in Tibet expressing anxiety and confusion over his retirement plan, the Dalai Lama's office here reportedly said.

BANGALORE, Dec 10 – The Urban Development Minister of the Indian state that is home of the largest number of Tibetan refugees in India applauded the Tibetan people, in particular the youth, for preserving their rich cultural heritage, and said -- while presiding over the 21st anniversary celebrations of the conferment of the Nobel Peace Prize in the city -- that the strong ties between Indians and Tibetans can never be destroyed.

More than 250 people have either been blocked from travelling, arrested, or put under house arrest by the Chinese government ahead Friday's Nobel Peace prize ceremony, according to Amnesty International.

Shanghai: The Chinese Communist Party continues to be furious at the award of this year's peace prize to Liu Xiaobo, a 54-year-old writer who is serving an 11-year prison sentence for inciting subversion. Mr Liu was the co-author of Charter 08, a petition for political reform in China.
Officials have begun a sweeping campaign to stop all mainland Chinese from either attending the ceremony in Oslo and from voicing any support for Mr Liu. A spokesman for Amnesty said they had 272 people locked up.

A parlare in sua vece è l'attrice Liv Ullmann, che legge l'ultimo discorso di Liu, intitolato "Non ho nemici”, pubblicato il 23 dicembre 2009, due giorni prima della condanna a 11 anni di carcere per istigazione alla sovversione.
